Belle Lurette, 2014, Cebene, Faugeres, France

The fact that the owner of Domaine Cebene, Brigitte Chevalier, features in the 2012 film by Ken Payton ‘Les Terroiristes du Languedoc’ should give you some idea of what drives this remarkable woman and what her wines are like. Brigitte states, somewhat cryptically, that she wants to make wines of the North in the South. What I take this to mean is that she values ripeness yes, but almost more importantly freshness and elegance alongside complexity and of course regional expression. The Belle Lurette is made from very old Carignan vines with a little Mourvedre and Grenache thrown in as is the way in this part of the world. It exhibits very ripe, juicy red fruit flavours that explode onto the palette with excellent minerality and fine, smooth, velvety tannins.
