Ciauria Etna Rosso 2015, Azienda Agricola Pietro Caciorgna, Sicily, Italy

grilled plums, rose, mineral
These high-altitude vineyards, planted on the side of the still-regularly-erupting Mount Etna, are planted solely with Nero Macalese, a cross of sorts between Pinot Noir and Nebbiolo. The wine has extraordinary aromatic lift, suggesting peach fuzz, crushed red cherries, sweet roses and wet stones. The palate is light and fresh, concealing the kind of fascination and depth you’d expect to find in a ripe Nebbiolo or a richly-scented Pinot Noir.
